To the people from the Caribbean it is a traditional Christmas treat. 

On some occasions they prefer ham in the jar as according to them, it has a better taste, and it is a tradition that goes a few centuries back.

In some European countries it is a treat that happens all year round.

Simply slice and serve with mustard, or with bread as a sandwich.
The secret is not how you eat it but how you prepare it.
We know at least one place in Ontario that prepares ham and smoked meats to perfection.
